Optimisation of carbon dioxide pressurisation pathways for pipeline offshore delivery

To maximise economies of scale future CO2 transport infrastructure, new pipelines within the carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) value chain, should ideally have excess capacity to satisfy transportation demand. However, in scenarios where booster compressors cannot be employed along pipeline, rise pipeline mass flow rate over time culminates higher energy consumption upstream compression/liquefaction. This work explores optimisation various pressurisation pathways assesses their flexibility handling a variability rates whilst delivering captured stream at fixed final pressure 100 barg. The study is based on Dunkirk 3D Project, which has planned nameplate 1 MtCO2/y, with other point sources taking up additional capacity. Two categories are considered, gas compression subcritical liquefaction pumping. These optimised enable fair comparison, considering number stages, ratio, cooling/liquefaction system. Modelling results indicate that temperature cooling utility greatest influence reducing overall duty sensitivity rate. Furthermore, 5 °C seawater as reduces conditioning process by 25.4% requires fewer stages relative conventional utilising water 30 °C.
